Fresh from its World Premiere at Dragon Con Independent Film Festival in Atlanta, Georgia, where it was a finalist for Best Feature Film, comes FANomenon, the one-hour documentary directorial debut from Lynne Carter. FANomenon is about a sci-fi junkie who goes on a quest to meet a fictional space explorer, and in doing so learns about the relationships fans have with each other, and with their heroes. Co-written by Carter, Jay Armstrong (E! News Weekend, Buy Herself) and Barbara Shearer, and produced by Carter and Armstrong FANomenon premieres Saturday, October 12, 8PM on Global as part of the channel’s brand-new series Obsessions.
FANomenon follows rural retail worker, Susan ‘Suzie’ Beckner, as she embarks on a life-changing quest to meet her hero, a fictional space explorer. Journeying through the world of science-fiction fandom, Beckner discovers much more than what she set out to find – legions of women, and not just young teenage girls, represent the economically powerful hidden sub-culture within the community of sci-fi fans. Having hidden in the shadows for decades for fear of ridicule, access to technology has brought these women together. So impactful is their social and economic significance, academia and Hollywood are now ‘discovering’ them for the first time. FANomenon is an intimate, yet cutting-edge exploration of their culture, their creative pursuits, and why they need heroes.
FANomenon focuses on Beckner and Susanne 'Dunnie' Pelzer, with appearances by actors Joe Flanigan (Stargate Atlantis), David Hewlett (Stargate: Atlantis), Torri Higginson (Stargate: Atlantis), Richard Hatch (Battlestar Galactica) and John Barrowman (Torchwood) as well as Henry Jenkins, Professor, Communications, Journalism and Cinematic Arts at University of Southern California and Jennifer Brayton, Associate Professor, Sociology, and Pop Culture Media Studies at Ryerson University.
Cinematography by Nigel Akam (The Basement, Voice of Courage), edited by Genie-nominated Deborah Palloway (Greatest Tank Battles, Mom’s Home) with original music by Oliver Johnson (Addicted to Plastic).
FANomenon is produced in association with Shaw Media and Government of Canada (Canada Film or Video Production Tax Credit).
